The first event of the 12th Season of the Spur Schools MTB League kicks off at Hazeldean outside Pretoria on Saturday where high schools from the Gauteng North region will gather for the inaugural round of the 2021 competition.
In total, 11 events are planned over the next 7 weeks as each region hosts their respective events with all official provinces represented. New for 2021 is a time trial based format for the opening rounds of competition to facilitate Covid-19 protocol management and to generate all-important seeding data required to manage the forthcoming XCO based rounds of racing taking place from the 3rd term.
Schools earn points based on their riders’ performance with the top High Schools vying for a qualifying slot at the prestigious National Finals held in October while primary schools compete for provincial trophies. Riders participate in a wide range of age categories from the 7 to 8-year-old sub-nippers to the 17 to 19-year-old juniors. Categories are further split into separate boys and girls competitions.
The League was founded in 2009 and in 2019 attracted over 20 000 entries, making it one of the largest inter-school sports competitions in the country and the 2nd largest youth cycling competition in the world. Entries for upcoming events are live on www.spurmtbleague.co.za and schools requiring more information can visit www.schoolscyclingsa.co.za
