Shimano 105 goes electronic and 12-speed

Today Shimano upgraded its 105 groupset to a 12-speed semi-wireless electronic platform. Here’s the official release from Shimano.
New Shimano 105 Di2 delivers 12-speed shifting and a wireless cockpit set up, to more riders

40 years since its first introduction, Shimano 105 receives the ultimate upgrade with a move to Di2 electronic shifting. In doing so, we now offer Di2 performance to an entirely new range of riders, in a 12-speed package, with reliable and easy-to-use wireless operation. Shimano 105 Di2 is the culmination of years of research and development, where flawless wireless shifting, tailored gearing, and an exceptional braking system, mark a new era in affordable performance.

The wireless cockpit is paired with a wired connection between a single, seat-tube-stored battery driving the front and rear derailleurs. As with the Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2 systems, 105 Di2 is highly customizable using our E-Tube Project App. The App allows you to adjust shifting speed, and the number of gears shifted with each push of the button. The system also pairs with third-party cycling computers allowing you to monitor gear selection and battery status.

Utilizing feedback from our professional riders, we have refined the ergonomics of the levers to enhance comfort and control in every riding position. The braking is also optimized thanks to a lighter, smoother lever action and expanded braking control area. By using a single, internally housed rechargeable battery, charging is straightforward and the battery is protected – ensuring stable and reliable shifting at all times.

By moving to a 12-speed cassette, Shimano 105 now has the high and low gearing that riders want, along with an intelligent progression of gear steps in between. The gearing options are an 11-34 or 11-36 cassette and a 50-34 or 52-36 crankset. Together they deliver low, even sub 1:1, gear combinations that let riders take on steeper slopes and better control their efforts because gear steps are more closely spaced allowing riders to find a comfortable cadence, always.

We revamped the braking system too making it quieter and easier to maintain. It also feels more controlled and more powerful. The initial contact point arrives sooner, the control zone is wider and the pad-to-rotor clearance is 10% wider. The brakes can be bled without removing the caliper from the frame.

Last but not least we are launching our two most-affordable carbon wheelsets. The C32 is a climbing wheelset, it is 32mm high and weighs 1502g. The C46 is 46mm tall offering weighing 1610g. Both are 11 or 12-speed compatible and are tubeless-ready.
