Revised geometry. Two water bottles inside the frame. Santa Cruz is excited to introduce the new Blur, Blur TR and Juliana Wilder into South Africa. Here’s their official release.
The Blur is built around Santa Cruz’s new trademarked Superlight Suspension design that is tuned to optimize the ride characteristics demanded by modern mountain bikers – lightweight and efficient with ample plushness to ensure riders are in control when the terrain gets gnarly. Critically for South Africans, the Superlight suspension layout allows the Blur’s front triangle to comfortably house two water bottles for those long summer rides, grueling stage races or single-day challenges. Droppers now come fitted standard on all XC and TR models giving riders more confidence when the trail points down. Santa Cruz’s carbon engineers and geometry wizards have designed each frame size with chainstays that are proportional so that riders of all heights get the same balanced geometry and bike fit. In line with modern XC trends, the new Blur is longer and slacker and features variable seat tube angles for a better fit across all sizes.
The Fair Advantage
We tapped into everything we’ve learned from years of making the highest quality carbon full-suspension bikes so that we could put as little (weight) as possible into the Blur. The Blur isn’t guaranteed to make you a race winner but being the lightest, full-suspension carbon XC bike we’ve ever made (289g lighter than the previous Blur) it might be the difference between claiming first place… or just crossing the line.
Superlight Suspension Design
Using our own composites lab in California we experimented with various layups and have tuned the right amount of spring force into the carbon to achieve a desirable balance of flex, damping and durability. Whilst flex stays are not new, what makes ours unique, is our carbon knowledge to tune the rear end precisely (through layups) to achieve a desirable leverage curve.
Leverage curve vs anti-squat: Rather than using high anti-squat to resist bobbing from a progressive high leverage shock we looked to the leverage curve to provide support and control. This results in a lower and more consistent leverage curve which enabled us to reduce anti-squat, and therefore chain influence on the suspension. This setup allows more traction and sensitivity in both climbing and descending scenarios. It also produces a more efficient forward drive because less pedaling input from anti-squat is utilized to overcome the rider’s body weight influence on the suspension.
Two Bottles Inside The Frame
We understand the importance of hydration on long rides, marathons or point-to-point events so we’ve designed the new Blur to accommodate two bottles inside the frame, plus a third on the downtube.
What About The Geometry?
We’ve designed each frame size so that every rider, no matter their height, gets the same balanced geometry and bike fit. To do this, the chainstay lengths vary through the size curves and this is a unique feature in the XC market. The new Blur also has a variable seat tube angle to improve fit, with a longer reach number and slacker head tube angle built to be ridden with a short 60mm stem. The BB height can be set at 331mm or 340mm, the head angle runs at 68.3° or 67.1° and the reach numbers start at 412mm and run up to 495mm.
Blur XC Vs. Blur TR
Blur XC is a 100mm front and rear package running on light Maxxis Aspen 2.4″ tyres, a light dropper, remote lockout and the RockShox SidLuxe and Sid SL suspension. It is available in two colours, a C or CC frame with different build kits.
The Blur TR is a 120mm front, 115mm rear bike with beefier Rekon Race 2.4″ tyres. Blur TR has a full-height dropper post, no remote lockout, bigger rotors and a Fox 34 StepCast fork. Blur TR is not a trail bike, it’s a race bike built for the gnarlier courses. The Blur TR head angle is 0.7° slacker than the Blur XC.
NEW Juliana Wilder
The all-new Wilder features 120mm front with 115mm of rear suspension on our new Superlight Suspension platform. It is a 29er only package, available in three sizes with our C or CC carbon frame. The Wilder has all the bells and whistles of the new Blur including two water bottle mounts inside the frame (with a 3rd on the downtube), variable chainstay lengths across the sizes and revised — longer and slacker — geometry. It’s made for racing, backyard adventures, bucket list rides or serious challenges.
NEW Reserve 28 XC Wheels
The lightest Reserve MTB rim yet | Weighing in at 1367g complete with DT Swiss 180 Hubs, valves and tape; the Reserve 28 XC’s are our lightest wheelset yet. This is a 24-hole, 28mm inner width rim designed specifically for XC racing and riding. We’ve created a shallower and wider rim bed and sized everything around the newer generation of higher volume XC tires – that’s 2.2″ right up to 2.5″ sizing.
