Savanna Origin of Trails Course Preview by Corrie Muller

Set to take the City of Oaks by storm this weekend, the 7th annual Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience will treat riders to a 2-day jol on the trails.

It’s a busy week for route designer Corrie Muller as he puts the final work in ahead of the event. Nevertheless we squeezed some comments out of him regarding what you can expect on each stage.

Riders in action at the savanna origin of trails mountain bike race in stellenbosch.
The Marathon Route features a mix of vineyard trails, single tracks, some awesome descents in Jonkershoek and a trip through G-Spot.

Stage One will start in Die Laan, Stellenbosch and finish at the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate.  The route is between 50 and 60km and includes 1400m of climbing through a mix of pine plantations, iconic downhill single tracks, fast sections and a floating bridge.  This route is ideal for intermediate riders that possess a fair amount of fitness.” – Corrie

Stage Two of the Marathon will start and finish at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate.  The Marathon Route has 1 150m of climbing and features vineyard trails, Fynbos tracks and single tracks.  This is an entirely new stage with iconic sections including a secluded valley that has never been open to mountain bikers and of course the much-loved G-Spot section.  This stage is certainly easier than Stage One and is also around 50 to 60km in length.” – Corrie

Stage One of the Half Marathon will also start in Die Laan, Stellenbosch, and finish at the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. The route will consist of easy single track in Jonkershoek, open flat sections, bike park-style G-Spot trails and Blaauwklippen’s new tracks.  The route has a total of 600m of climbing and is ideal for all mountain bikers. It’s easy flowing, with minimum technical sections. The distance is 28 to 30km.” – Corrie

Stage Two of the Half Marathon is also new.  It has 550m of climbing and is around 28 to 30km long. The route includes vineyard trails and flat single tracks.” – Corrie

“The Fun Ride will start at the same venue as the Marathon and Half Marathon.  Featuring 220m of climbing and between 8 and 10km long, the route will go up to Coetzenburg where riders will get to experience the lower lines of G-Spot.  After this section the route is basically straight and flat into Eden Forest for some more trails. It ends with the last fun bits in the new Pine Avenue section before the roll back to Blaauwklippen.” – Corrie

“An individual 2-day MTB Experience, the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience will treat riders to the best trails on offer in Stellenbosch. Affectionately dubbed the ‘MTB Party of the year’, the event is open to mountain biking enthusiasts of all ages.  Remember that temperatures can soar in Stellenbosch around this time of the year.  Although the water points will be fully stocked, we encourage riders to also carry enough water with them.  If it’s your first time crossing the Iconic Mont Marie floating bridge, be sure to keep your momentum.  Speed is your friend.  We cannot wait to welcome riders to the 2019 Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience.”  – Michael Meyer, Managing Director, Stillwater Sports Management.
