Tech: FAQ with RockShox on the 2020 Signature Series

Earlier this month RockShox launched their new Signature Series. We sifted through the techy stuff and have created an extensive FAQ for riders keen to understand exactly where the performance advantages lie.

2020 Signature Series Forks

Signature Series, – what is it? “Signature Series” refers to our premium suspension offering that includes SID, Lyrik, Pike, BoXXer, Deluxe, Super Deluxe, and Reverb product families. Referencing these products as our Signature Series is our way of elevating our high end offering from the broad line of products we provide.

Are there any changes to the chassis of BoXXer, Lyrik, Pike and SID forks? The external chassis of the forks are all the same. The changes we have made are internal and are the Charger 2.1 damper, wiper seals and assembly.

Why did you switch to Dynamic Seal Grease instead of SRAM Butter in the air spring? It has better long term friction properties over SRAM Butter. It stays slipperier for longer.

What have you changed with the lower leg wiper seals? We’ve been working with SKF, the world’s highest-performance seal manufacturer, for over 5 years. Together we’ll provide ultra-low friction wiper seals, less fatigue, and unmatched suspension feel, all while keeping the dirt where it belongs.

Do you add additional lubrication oil in the air spring? How much and which type? Yes, for MY20 we add 3 cc’s of lower leg oil to the air spring.

Are there any changes to the air spring shaft for MY20 forks? No.

Where have you reduced friction on the forks? There are several changes and developments including new SKF wiper seals, Maxima Plush Fluid, less High Speed compression, a new piston wearband, a new SKF rebound shaft seal and the new Charger 2.1.

Can I buy the Charger 2.1 to upgrade my 2019 fork? Yes, Charger 2.1 upgrade kits are available for this purpose.

Which Charger 2.1’s are available? We will offer Charger 2.1 as damper upgrade kits in both RC2 and RCT3.

Which 2020 forks feature Charger 2.1? Charger 2.1 is featured on Ultimate versions of Pike, Lyrik and BoXXer, and also on Select+ versions of Lyrik and Pike.

So what’s new about Charger 2.1? It’s completely re-designed to reduce unwanted friction, which reduces hand fatigue and increases rider confidence and control. The high and low-speed compression is retuned, there is a new piston wearband and new SKF seals.

Can you explain those benefits a little more please? By taking a softer approach to High Speed Compression (HSC), the redesigned shim stack helps limit the impact of high-speed hits and harsh braking bumps. That means more control for you and less fatigue caused by feedback at the handlebar. The new refined Low Speed Compression (LSC) adjustment range allows the fork to ride higher, giving you the most available travel and keeping your wheels on top of the terrain hit after hit.

Is Charger 2.1 the same part for all levels of travel of my fork? Yes, the same damper can be used for the full travel range. There are specific dampers for Pike, Lyrik and BoXXer.

Which forks can I upgrade with Charger 2.1? How far back can I go? For RCT3 it’s Pike’s from 2014 onwards and Lyriks from 2016 onwards. For RC2 it’s the Pike from 2018 onwards, Lyrik from 2016 onwards and BoXXer from 2019 onwards.

Why did you call it Charger 2.1 and not just Charger 3? The fundamental damper architecture has not changed between Charger 2 and Charger 2.1. Think of this as a performance enhancing update not a ground up redesign.

How many adjustment increments are there on the damper? Does the number of increments change from Charger 2 (HSC, LSC, Rebound)? The number of clicks has not changed with Charger 2.1 vs Charger 2.

Why are you now using Maxima Plush Fluid? What are the benefits over current RockShox fluid? Developed with the world’s fastest racers, on the world’s toughest circuits. Maxima Plush Fluid is designed to protect from suspension wear, reduce friction, and silence damper noise while maintaining a consistent feel in all temperatures. It’s just better.

Can I increase the performance of my Charger 2 damper by using Maxima Plush fluid alone? Yes, replacing the stock fluid with Maxima Plush will increase performance but you are not getting the same full benefit as with the new Charger 2.1.

What is the difference between the current SKF wiper seals and the new SKF seals for 2020 forks? The new SKF seals may look very similar but they have a new seal lip geometry that reduces friction whilst maintaining the same level of dirt exclusion.

Have the seals inside the new Charger damper also changed? Yea. The new Charger 2.1 features an all-new SKF rod seal that decreases friction by upwards of 30% at the rebound shaft.

How does a new Piston wear band help with better tracking? Better oil flow management through the piston provides better damping control keeping the wheels exactly where you want them to be, tracking the trail ahead.

What exactly has changed inside the damper? Taking a softer approach to High Speed Compression (HSC), the redesigned shim stack helps limit the impact of high speed hits and harsh braking bumps. That means more control for you and less fatigue caused by feedback at the handlebar. The new refined Low Speed Compression (LSC) adjustment range allows the fork to ride higher, giving you the most available travel and keeping your wheels on top of the terrain hit after hit.

Can I personalise the shim stack in Charger 2.1? No, we don’t offer that currently.

How do changes to LSC in the damper allow the fork to ride higher? Increasing low speed compression adds more control to fork movement and reduce potential diving.

Has the window (range) of adjustment for rebound and compression changed? No. There are no changes to the range of adjustment. We are still able to support the same range of rider weights and tuning as before.

Will Charger 2.1 be available in TrailHead App? Yes, all 2020 forks will be in the Trailhead App but we only provide air-spring and rebound settings.

If I upgrade my 2018/2019 fork with Charger 2.1, can I still use the TrailHead app for settings? Yes, the suggestions are mostly for air pressure. The only change will be rebound and it should be +/- 1 click.

Can I use Maxima Plush fluid in the lowers of my fork? No, Maxima Plush is a damping fluid. It is not designed to be used as a lower leg lube.

Is the grease and oil used in assembly different to 2019 forks? Yes, we use Maxima Plush in the cartridge dampers and RockShox Dynamic Seal Grease on all seals. Dynamic Seal Grease has better long term friction properties over SRAM Butter. It stays slipperier for longer.

2020 Signature Series Shocks

Are there any changes to damping architecture (different shim stack) on the 2020 shocks from the 2019 shocks? Only on the new Deluxe Ultimate shock.

Which shocks will be available in the Aftermarket channel? Only the Ultimate shocks.

Why are you now using Maxima Plush Fluid in your shocks? Developed with the world’s fastest racers, on the world’s toughest circuits. Maxima Plush Fluid is designed to protect from suspension wear, reduce friction, and silence damper noise while maintaining a consistent feel in all temperatures.

Can you explain what’s new about the Deluxe Ultimate shock? The Deluxe Ultimate shock is an entirely new damper made up of five tuneable pistons, representing a new level of inline shock. The shock deals with compression and rebound in a symmetric manner. The rebound/compression needle controls the oil flow in the initial shock movement — metering oil through an orifice before travelling through a shim stack. Therefore, LSC and rebound are managed more consistently than ever before. This system also stops the backflow of oil in the compression and rebound circuits.

2020 Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Deluxe Coil

What is the intended use of the new Deluxe Ultimate shock? Have the changes broadened the intended use? Deluxe Ultimate’s intended use is trail bikes.

Has the air volume changed for negative or positive on the shock or are the changes to damper only? Only damper changes — the air volume remains the same.

What does the compression adjustment dial do? The Deluxe Ultimate shock provides a clearly defined position for the base tune of the bike “0”. Moving to “+” adds damping and “-” takes away damping. The new adjustment range delivers a more user-friendly approach to managing compression damping on the bike and also allowing the user to easily return to factory spec or base tune. The increased compression and rebound control is particularly effective at lower shaft speeds where the damping is harder to control, such as jumps or berms — more control when you need it most.

2020 MegNeg shock kit

What is MegNeg and can I use it on any bike? Most but not all. MegNeg increases the negative volume meaning easier off-the-top movement and increased mid-stroke support. This works typically well with more linear spring curves. Suspension designs with a very progressive spring curve will find that MegNeg adds more mid-stroke support than a rider might prefer. Therefore, the performance characteristics of MegNeg are not suited to every type of suspension design.

What is the percentage increase of the negative air volume with MegNeg? The percentage of volume increase will depend on how many bottomless rings you are running.

  Negative Volume
Stock Air Can 100%
MegNeg with 0 Bottomless Ring 211%
MegNeg with 1 Bottomless Ring 199%
MegNeg with 2 Bottomless Rings 188%
MegNeg with 3 Bottomless Rings 176%
MegNeg with 4 Bottomless Rings 164%

How does MegNeg affect the spring curve of the Shock? MegNeg reduces the force required for initial breakaway and increases mid-stroke support. If you’re an aggressive rider who is willing to take the time to tune you’ll find a serious performance boost with MegNeg.

MegNeg kit.

Is the negative volume of MegNeg tuneable with bottomless rings? Yes.

Are there different size MegNeg’s available? Yes. There are three sizes of MegNeg to fit our three air can sizes.

Which shocks can I use MegNeg with? With Deluxe and Super Deluxe shocks.

ENDS.
