Trek’s all-new Fuel EX line-up features more travel & more sizes. | Official release.

Trek recently announced a revamp of its most popular trail bike, the Fuel EX. Fuel EX has always been an exceedingly capable option for riders who want a single mountain bike that rides almost anything. Now, it’s even more versatile and adventure-ready, thanks to updates in frame design, suspension and size range. With availability in South Africa as of today, here is a look through the range, features and pricing.

All Fuel EX models are specced as a 140mm front and 130mm rear combination, with dropper posts.

All Fuel EX models now feature a longer-travel 140 mm suspension fork with 130 mm of rear suspension travel. This combination gives riders more confidence on bigger hits without sacrificing climbing efficiency.  Fuel EX’s updated geometry strikes the right balance of capability and efficiency, too. The new models are longer and slacker than previous versions, making them feel more stable on descents.

The revised geometry improves climbing and descending.

They also have a steeper seat tube angle that puts the rider in a more efficient pedalling position. The new frames also feature a fixed lower shock mount that makes for stronger chainstays and increased pedalling efficiency. As with previous models, frame details like Mino Link adjustable geometry and Control Freak cable routing make it easy to for riders to run a clean, customised set up. OCLV Carbon Fuel EX models now have a frame-integrated storage compartment that lets riders easily store essentials like a tube or tools without the weight or hassle of a pack.

All the Fuel EX models are equipped with dropper posts for safe, fun and fast descending.

In addition to the new frame and suspension set-up, all Fuel EX models come equipped with trail-specific spec like dropper posts, wide-range 1x drivetrains, and grippy 2.6” tyres. Most models feature our RE:aktiv-damped shock. Select models feature RE:aktiv with Thru Shaft for even more traction and confidence.

All Fuel EX models will now be offered in size XS for a full size run of XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL. All models will also be available in at least two colours. ‘Rather than offering limited models for women, we’re offering more choices for everyone,’ said Mountain Bike Director John Riley. ‘Whether a rider is male or female, short or tall, or anywhere in between, Fuel EX offers the perfect fit.’

Size S riders get to choose between 27.5˝ or 29˝ wheels.

Fuel EX models also come with the best-fitting wheel size for each frame size. Size M and larger bikes come with 29˝ wheels. XS frames come with 27.5˝ wheels that are easier for smaller riders to control and offer better standover clearance. Size S riders get to choose between 27.5˝ or 29˝ wheels. This is because our research shows that riders of this size tend to be evenly split on wheel size preference. Fuel EX is available in a range of models through Trek’s global network of retailers and on Pricing starts at R34 999 for the Fuel EX 5, R46 999 for the Fuel EX 7 and R56 999 for the Fuel EX 8.
