Spoiler alert: if you don’t know the results then don’t read further, just hit play.
In the women’s event the Belgian Sanne Cant rode a tactically brilliant race to deny the dominant Dutch squad of rainbow stripes. Our heart’s go out to race favorite Lucinda Brand who had tough luck with multiple crashes including being ‘bar checked’ and slammed into the mud by the team mechanic during a bike exchange. That’s racing though, and to be fair, the Dutch quartet did appear to be unable to match the skill, speed and race prowess of the now three time World Champ Sanne Cant. What a race!
In the men’s race it was Dutch powerhouse Mathieu van der Poel who moved to the front early on and gapped the contenders, only to be reeled in by the Dutch. Perhap’s that was van der Poel’s tactic as no sooner had he been caught that he dropped the hammer on the technical off camber and had the bike completely sideways through the muddy off camber turns to move off the front again and solo to victory.
