Bike Check: Kai von During’s Trek Supercaliber

Kai von During is a powerful young rider who is a regular on the XCO podiums.

When you watch him ride its clear he is not lacking much in the skills department either. Whilst the 2020 racing season has been a disrupted one, Kai has had a lot of ride time on his Trek Supercaliber and his setup is pretty dialed.

Frame size: Kai rides a size M/L Supercaliber which is Trek’s solution for riders who find a large too long and a medium frame too short.

Drivetrain: SRAM XX1 cranks with Quarq AXS power meter and a 34t cSixx Chainring.

Shimano XTR pedals and 175mm SRAM XX1 cranks.
Brakes: SRAM Level Ultimate with the SRAM Centerline X 160mm rotors. | Fork: 100mm RockShox Sid Ultimate Carbon with rebound at 6 clicks from closed, one volume spacer and 65psi. The fork is tuned by RBC Suspension Tech who are based in Port Elizabeth.

Shock: Trek / Fox Iso-strut system which has 60mm of total rear travel. Kai runs his rebound at 8 clicks from closed with 108 PSI and the medium volume spacer. A lockout system is fitted to the bike.

Bars: Bontrager Kovee XXX at 720mm wide, 0mm rise and 35mm clamp diameter. Kai uses the thin ESI silicone grips.

Wheels and tyres: Bontrager Kovee XXX wheels which weigh 1 290g are mated to 2.35inch Bontrager XR2 tyres. Kai says although the wider tyres are slightly heavier than the 2.2inch versions he prefers the grip and added compliance they offer.
