Lukas Baum is back in South Africa to rally the wildest of all mountain bike stage races, the Cape Epic. For 2023, the team is riding the 120mm Orbea Oiz and has partnered with Leatt to develop a new Endurance range of gear. Team Orbea X Leatt Speed Company Racing are doing their final pre-race shakedown rides in Stellenbosch. Lukas has a very interesting setup…
Fox 34 Stepcast fork which is set very plush off the top with tons of mid-stroke followed by more ramp than most. It’s a very progressive setting and his rebound is on the quicker side too. Fox i-Line DPS Factory shock on the back. Both the fork and shock are on remote lockout which is a push-to-unlock system with 3 settings. Open, semi-open and closed. Again, the front and rear are custom tuned and feel very balanced. Here’s that under bar remote. All very neat looking.Single-piston Shimano XTR brakes with 160mm rotors on both ends. | *Click to enlargeThat ‘very close to 10kg’ includes this tape around the seat post that marks Lukas’ saddle height. Just kidding. It is however the smartest way to maintain the existing setup when traveling or working on bikes. There’s more setback here than you can shake a stick at. Saddle nose points down, a little. | *Click to enlargeOf course we’ve got another angle of that setback. Here you go bru. The story is that Bike Ahead Composites created a one-off carbon seatpost to give Lukas his desired setback so he didn’t have to run the saddle maxed out on the rails. Yes, that’s a whole new carbon mold for a one-off seatpost. To combat the gnar of the Epic the team are running Schwalbe Racing Ralph tyres in 2.35 on the front and back. Tyre pressures are super secret of course but Lukas is a rad guy and shares secrets. 16psi front and 17.5psi rear. Plenty of climbing grip on offer there. Lukas says: “No inserts or tyre liners – we roll on raw air.”DT Swiss 240 hubs and bladed spokes.Shimano XTR drivetrain, 175mm cranks and a 38T chainring.SRM power meter, XTR pedals and the sparklingest* paintwork all over this frame. (*We just made that a word.)Wheels are by Bike Ahead Composites, that’s a low 20mm profile, they have a 30mm inner diameter and weigh in the 1300g range.Details..The finish is impressive.
