From Lion’s Head through to Devil’s Peak – there isn’t a trail in town that SJ has not ridden.

SJ Kotze is a part-owner of the popular Revolution Cycles in Bree Street, Cape Town. A qualified actuary who opted to join the family bike business rather than ply his trade in the world of risk measurement and management. His years in the world of bicycle retail and experiences on the trails have inspired and influenced his choice in bike and componentry. This is a bike check of SJ’s personal shred-sled.

Big rocks are best ridden with big wheels and big travel bikes.

What’s on your bike yet not easily available in South Africa? The tyres, I stole them from my Dad’s bike but don’t tell him! They will be available soon, just not yet, but promise me, not a word aye!

If you sold the bike, what component would you keep for your next bike? These SRAM Code RSC brakes. I love them.

What surprises you the most about this bike? For a 170mm bike it is very comfortable on the climbs — even with the shock open.

Any imminent component upgrades? I’m thinking about a carbon rim setup, maybe only for the front wheel though as I think it will improve handling.

What do you enjoy the most about this bike? It feels indestructible on chunky rocks and roots.
