Jarryd rails the end of the Belgian Waffle trail that contours Cape Town’s Signal Hill.
Jarryd Haley, the other boss at East City Cycles in Cape Town, is a helluva weapon on a bicycle. Any bicycle. He can dirt jump, ride downhill, smash a gravel stage race, blitz Strava on a road bike or float down the jank on his 120mm trail bike. He’s also, a helluva nice guy that offers some of the best advice you’ll ever get from any bike store. We checked out his personal steed – for the trail – a Cannondale Scalpel SE.
BN: Talk us through the customized or personalized components you have.
I’ve put a RockShox Pike onto the bike.
BN: Do you set your suspension up by sag or by feel?
Feel.
BN: What surprises you the most about this bike?
I used to race Downhill bikes and I’ve experienced the progression of ‘XC’ bikes of late but this bike still surprises me. It’s so very capable on gnarly trails yet climbs very efficiently.
BN: Are there any other component upgrades on the cards?
I don’t think so no.
BN: What do you enjoy the most about the bike?
Honestly, it’s just a ton of fun to ride.
Jarryd rides a size Large Cannondale Scalpel SE.The Scalpel SE is a 120mm version of the XC/marathon race Scalpel and this bike (as you see it here with burlier tyres, pedals and mud) weighs exactly 12.94kg.Jarryd uses the stock Cannondale 1 Riser bar which is a carbon bar in a 15mm rise, 9° sweep and 4° rise. He is running them at 780mm. The stem is also from Cannondale, it’s a 50mm to keep things planted in the gnar.Fabric 50:01 Magic Grips which are ribbed with an inner lock ring.The cabling is wrapped to clean up the looks and reduce rattling when pinning trails.SRAM Level TLM brakes.Rotor size is 180mm front and 160mm rear and Jarryd runs a RockShox Pike Ultimate fork.A RockShox mudguard keeps the muck off Jarryd’s face.RockShox SIDLuxe Ultimate shock with a two-position manual adjust compression lever for firming things up.The Scalpel is ‘stash compatible’ – meaning small tools can be stowed between the water bottle mount and frame.SRAM XO1 rear mech with an Eagle 10-52t cassette.Jarryd dabbles in Gravel and Road so isn’t scared to rock a 34t chainring on his Downcountry rig. Truvativ Stylo cranks and Shimano base level trail pedals complete the drivetrain.Maxxis Minion DHF with 26psi up front.With a faster rolling Recon Race 2.4 EXO Protection rear with 27psi on the back.Carbon wheels are from Zero Two. That’s a Fabric Scoop Flat Race saddle with hollow titanium rails, a 170mm Lyne dropper post and Jarryd’s local trails are packed with square-edged jank so he always carries a tube.Keep railing the trails Jarryd!
