Bike Check: Danny Fowler’s Custom Trek Supercaliber


With decades of bike racing experience and a family cycling pedigree to lean on, Danny Fowler carries his passion for bikes straight into his shop, The Bicycle Service Company.
The store is co-owned with another legend of South African cycling, Roger Blewett and together with their team they offer a one-stop-shop for beginners and experienced riders.
From National Championship Downhill Racing to local Enduro races, to some of the countries major Stage Races, Danny is always willing to give it a go and lands on the podium more often than not. This is his latest ‘plus one’, a custom build Trek Supercaliber 9.9.

BN: What’s on your bike yet not easily available in South Africa?
My Selle Italia SLR X Cross saddle – it’s been discontinued.
BN: If you sold the bike, what component would you keep for your next bike?
My custom-build South Industry rims on DT SWISS 240s Hubs and my Selle Italia Saddle.
BN: What surprises you the most about this bike?
The bike is super responsive when you put the power down and is surprisingly capable on the technical and rocky terrain.
BN: Any imminent component upgrades?
Thinking of building the hoops onto DT 180 hubs and ….
BN: What do you enjoy the most about this bike?
It is so fast … and it loves the tight ‘n twisty single-track.
