Checkpoint+ is a lightweight, mid-power electric assist version of the iconic Checkpoint

Trek Checkpoint+ SL marks a new chapter for Trek as the brand launches its first dedicated electric gravel bike. The new model blends the versatility and adventure-ready design of the well-known Trek Checkpoint SL, with a lightweight pedal-assist system designed to enhance long days on mixed terrain.

Checkpoint+ SL is powered by the TQ driveunit.

Lightweight electric design

At the heart of the Checkpoint+ SL is one of the more popular compact driveunits, the TQ‑HPR60 motor. It is paired with a slim 360Wh battery that is integrated into the downtube. The TQ system is known for it’s natural-feeling and on the Checkpoint+ SL provides support up to 45km/h. There’s up to 60Nm of torque and 350W of peak power available, which puts it into the category of mid-power eBikes.

The TQ system is famed for being remarkably quiet.

The motor runs on a harmonic pin ring design and is known for its high torque density. It is also one of the smaller, less obtrusive motors. The integrated 360Wh battery keeps the system light and streamlined, however riders looking to extend their range can add an optional 160Wh range extender battery. Control of the system comes via TQ’s minimalist top-tube colour display and discreet handlebar remote.

Clearance for tyres up to 50mm ensures the bike remains capable on rough gravel roads and adventure routes, while compatibility with gravel suspension forks and dropper posts adds further versatility.

The TQ system is famed for being remarkably quiet, which is something that has become important to most eBike riders. Trek claims a maximum range of up to 97km, depending on terrain, rider input and assist mode. Adding the range extender battery will increase range capability by around 44%. The stated weight of 13.8kgs is around 4kgs more than its non-electric version, the Checkpoint SL.

Expanding Trek’s electric performance line-up

The Checkpoint+ SL joins a growing range of lightweight electric bikes from Trek that feature TQ’s compact drive systems. We’ve already seen the technology appear in other bikes from Trek, including the Fuel EXe and Slash+ eMTB platforms. With the introduction of the Checkpoint+ SL, Trek now offers a pedal-assist option across nearly every major riding category – from road and gravel to mountain biking.

Familiar Checkpoint design, now electrified

On closer inspection, the Checkpoint+ SL closely mirrors the design and geometry of the non-electric Checkpoint SL, with the motor and battery neatly integrated into the frame. The bike is built around Trek’s 500 Series OCLV carbon frame and is available in South Africa in two different build options. Comfort remains a high priority in this category and Trek has that box ticked with their seat tube IsoSpeed decoupler system. This design separates the seat tube from the rest of the frame structure, to absorb vibrations and smooth out rough surfaces on long rides.

Assist levels are selected through hood mounted buttons.

Like its analogue sibling, the Checkpoint+ SL is built with versatility in mind – the frame and fork feature numerous mounting points for accessories, water bottles and bags. These mounts are designed to work seamlessly with Trek’s own range of adventure bags, including the Trek Adventure Triangle Bag and Trek Adventure Frame Bag, making it easy to load up for big outings or multi-day gravel adventures.

Gravel endurance geometry

The Checkpoint+ SL retains Trek’s “gravel endurance” geometry, offering a stable and comfortable riding position suited to long-distance gravel rides.

The geometry is almost identical to the standard Checkpoint SL, with one small adjustment: the chainstays are 10mm longer to accommodate the motor system. This slightly increases the wheelbase, which should increase stability. The bike is offered in six frame sizes – from XS to XL – and is designed to fit riders between 1.40m to 2.05m.

Pricing and models

All models of the Checkpoint+ SL are compatible with dropper posts and front suspension. They all share the same 500 Series OCLV carbon frame, TQ-HPR60 motor and 360Wh battery system. Pricing starts at around R100k for the SL 5 model and rises to R145k for the top-tier SL 7 AXS model which is the model that includes a suspension fork, as standard spec. //
