UPDATE 15 JUNE | The Greyt Escape has been postponed until further notice
“Due to, and as a result of recent extreme weather conditions, weather warnings and damage to routes, we have no other choice but to postpone the Greyt Escape until further notice. The unexpected intensity of rainfall and further prediction of rain imposes too much of a potential safety risk to continue with the event. We will communicate a further outcome as soon as we have clarity. We appreciate your insight in this matter.” – Organizers.
Experience the Best Trails of Greyton
The Greyt Escape Adventure Weekend includes a mountain bike race and trail run, each with two distances to choose from. You’ll experience the best trails in the region. Here’s all you need to know:
The Greyt Escape | 17 & 18 June 2023 | Greyton, Western Cape
Greyt Escape is an annual mountain bike event taking riders through the best trails of Greyton and the Riviersonderend mountain range. This year, both routes will start and finish at Rusty Gate, and include the iconic climb back up to Rusty Gate. The 65km race includes a whopping 1800m of climbing and the 45km race has 1050m. From the start, the 45km and 65km races roll through to Meerlustkloof, up to Peerboord and down to Moreson before splitting. The long route then winds up the UFO climb before descending to Middelplaas where it joins up with the short route. From here, expect spectacular singletrack on the way to Meerlustkloof and Elandskloof. More technical climbs and fast descents take you through to the final climb to Rusty Gate and a frosty beverage at the finish.
This year’s Greyt Escape Adventure weekend will also include an exhilarating Trail Run on Sunday 18 June, along the mountainside hiking trails of Rusty Gate. The 12km Trail Run is on a technical and challenging route designed for the trail running gurus. The route takes runners on a hair-raising descent into the gorge before climbing up a collection of switchbacks and meandering in the direction of the waterfall before eventually crossing over to the Crest route. Expect the best trail running in the region. 900m of climbing is a biggie, so be prepared. Looking for something a little tamer? The 6km Trail Run is just as spectacular and holds its own charm with a slightly less technical swing, but also boasts around 400m elevation.
