First Look: Zipp’s New Road Wheelsets with in-wheel Tyre Pressure Monitoring

The new Zipp 353 NSW and 303 SW feature the brand’s AXS Wheel Sensor technology that monitors tyre pressure, in real-time. There’s a revised carbon layup that improves impact strength, hubs with ceramic bearings and some new rubber from their colab with Goodyear, designed specifically for use with Zipp wheels. Here’s our first look at it all.

Zipp 353 NSW
Lightweight climber’s wheelset, designed for racing
The lightest of the lot is the new 353 NSW that is a SRAM AXS connected wheel, with in-wheel tyre pressure monitoring. You’ll be able to monitor tyre pressure in real-time, without an external device connected to the valve, with the upside being you can fine-tune your tyre pressure to match the ride experience and roads you are on. How it works is before you ride, you can check your pressures by looking at the lights – a green light means the pressure is within your pre-determined preferencial settings and you are good to go. During the ride, you can monitor the pressure to dial in your ideal setting and detect issues early.

The new 353 NSW features the same 35/40mm undulating design that maximizes aero gains with crosswind stability, in a featherweight package of just 1310 grams. The ZR1 SL hubs feature ceramic bearings, 66 points of engagement and are 30 grams lighter than previous models. Optimized for 30mm tyres, the crew at Zipp say you can run any brand tubeless tyre but they recommend the Goodyear Fitment Series options.

Zipp 303 SW
Classic contemporary all-road wheelset
The 303 SW is another new tubeless wheelset with Zipp’s AXS Wheel Sensor tyre pressure monitoring tech. More versatile than the gravel-specific XPLR wheels, the 303 SW is more of an all-road option designed for road and milder gravel conditions.

The 303 SW has a 40mm rim depth, a wide stance and is optimized for 30 to 35mm tyres. Zipp says the rim shape and carbon layup has been refined to reduce the chance of pinch flats. Compared to the previous iteration, impact strength has been improved by almost 10%. 1440 grams is still very much on the light side of things and considering the versatility, this should be a popular option.

Goodyear Vector R XPLR
40mm road tyre!
More volume, a strong casing, flat protection and fast-rolling – that’s the new Goodyear Vector R XPLR. From the continued collaboration between Zipp and Goodyear, this 40mm road tyre has been designed for exclusive use with the 303 XPLR wheel. The idea is to provide a wide, aero and fast option for riders who enjoy the challenge of conquering rough and harsh roads, as opposed to perfect pave.

Features include a supple 120 TPI casing, lightweight sidewall protection, an anti-flat belt and a minimalist tread pattern. 440 grams is a mighty number indeed, however, this is a no worries option ideal for stomping through the gnarliest roads, without being bounced all over the shop.

Goodyear Eagle F1 R Z29 Aero
29mm road race tyre
This is an ultra-lightweight, tubeless-ready race tyre that is designed specifically to fit Zipp’s 23mm rims, with a smooth transition from tyre to rim. That smooth ‘join’ of the rim and tyre, boosts aerodynamics of the system.

Goodyear have used a special rubber compound that boosts rolling speed and a textured tread pattern for maximum corner grip. In addition to drag reduction, we are told the Aero Lip technology protects against pinch flats too.
