From sprinters chasing marginal gains to endurance riders weighing potential trade-offs, understanding how creatine works – and whether it fits your discipline – is essential before adding it to your routine.

What is creatine?
Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in small amounts in foods like red meat and fish – and it’s also produced by the body. It’s stored primarily in muscles as phosphocreatine and plays a key role in short bursts of high-intensity energy production. Supplementing with creatine increases these stores, giving muscles a larger “energy reserve” to draw from during intense efforts.
How does it work?
Creatine supports the body’s rapid energy system, specifically the ATP-PC system. During short, explosive efforts – like sprinting out of a corner or attacking on a climb – your body uses ATP (adenosine triphosphate) for immediate energy. Creatine helps regenerate ATP more quickly, allowing you to sustain high power output for slightly longer and recover faster between repeated efforts.

For climbers or long-distance specialists, even a slight weight gain potentially offsets some of the performance benefits, especially on sustained climbs.

What are the side effects?
Creatine is generally considered safe for healthy individuals when taken at recommended doses. The most common side effect is mild water retention, which can lead to a feeling of heaviness or slight weight gain. Some users may experience mild digestive discomfort, especially if taking high doses initially. Concerns about kidney damage are often overstated, but individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions should avoid creatine or consult a medical professional before use. Staying well hydrated is important while supplementing.
What sort of dosage is ideal?
